Baikal Origin Stories

The people of much of the world have been deeply affected by the original people of Lake Baikal. Baikal is located in Siberia in modern Russia. From Finland to North and South America through Central and South Asia, we find their culture and genetic history. Often described as fierce warriors no matter where they are found, the roots of animism and cultural awareness/ cohesion are key to their way of life. I started this exploration when … Read more

Ha Long Bay

With over 1600 islands it is relatively easy to get lost in Vietnam’s most popular tourist attractions. Faith

My parent’s love for each other was without question.

Every work day of every week of every year, provided my dad was in town, he would enter the house in the same way. He would open the door and no matter who was in his path he would call out for my mom. When finding her, he would give her a big hug and a kiss. I once asked him whether he had noticed my sister and me standing in his path. He simply said: “children are temporary.”

Seattle

I have made Seattle my home, on-and-off, for the past 47 years. It is a beautiful city that has changed many times since I arrived. Though I have never found anywhere else that I want to live permanently, the rainy season keeps driving me to cast my net far-and-wide for a new home. Every time I think I can live the rest of my days in this city, another rain cloud opens up and drives me … Read more

Glass Planet

The planet is transforming rapidly. From the 17th century when coal choked off the industrial cities of the world through to the 20th century when CO2 emissions permanently changed the livability of our home. The 21st century will bring mass extinctions that may very well include human life. I have borrowed from Pacific Northwest Native American storytelling to build my own story. My series of glass sculpture incorporates animals into composite images that suggest a commonality … Read more

Black Lives Matter

A jury of mostly White women found Mr Zimmerman not guilty of murder. They determined that he had the right to shoot and kill Trevon because he was afraid for his life. Zimmerman, an adult with a gun shot a boy of 14 because he was afraid for his life? Not plausible. Even President Obama expressed his deep anger and sadness that Treyvon was murdered and without penalty stating ‘that could have been my child; that could have been me.’ The outright racism of a White man murdering a Black boy brought the nation forward into the crisis we currently face.

Night World

Impressions of travel by night

Nighttime brings about a mysterious element. Sight is focused differently and senses are heightened. In my series Night World, I have selected images from my travels that invite the viewer to see the world as it can only be experienced after hours.

I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.

Temples of Ankor

The temple complexes of Ankor were originally built to house the capital of the Kmer Empire and honor their Hindu god Vishnu from the 9th to the 15th centuries CE. The temples were converted to honor Buddha along the way, and still serve that purpose, today. Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.― Mark Twain People are central to these temples, now. Tourists provide much … Read more
