Baikal Origin Stories

by

The people of much of the world have been deeply affected by the original people of Lake Baikal.

Baikal is located in Siberia in modern Russia. From Finland to North and South America through Central and South Asia, we find their culture and genetic history. Often described as fierce warriors no matter where they are found, the roots of animism and cultural awareness/ cohesion are key to their way of life.

I started this exploration when I became interested in one set of people that currently occupy parts of Southern China, Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand variously known as the H’Mong, the Mong, and the Miao. Their language and culture are distinct and somewhat ancient compared to their surroundings, comprising the Hmong-Mien languages.

I will continue with the story of the people from this region who branched out so far.

One direction to explore is genetic. Another is origin stories. Another is through textiles and art. So far, I have found genetic ties from Finland to the Americas, including migrations around 15,000 years ago (Oldest connection with Native Americans identified near Lake Baikal in Siberia (phys.org)). The ties to the H’Mong people also date from this period but are related via traditions, stories and textiles brought through Chinese history telling (much more work to do here to make a real link).

Stay tuned for more. I will keep this as an ongoing thread.
