A disappearing landscape and people
SaPa, the Northernmost region of Vietnam sits directly on the Vietnam/ China border. The people who live there occupy Northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Southern China. The people pictured here are H’mong. They have an independent history unique to themselves dating back millennia in time and through Central China during the rising of the Han. Their origin is currently unknown but is said to be from Siberia in the area around Lake Baikal, the same place as where American indigenous peoples originate.
Whether you eat or not, at least hold a spoon
Whether you laugh or not, at least smile
– H’mong proverb
